Our Work

The Institute for Prison Teaching and Outreach works to provide educational programming behind bars through a variety of programs:

Student Fellowship Program

TheĀ  Institute for Prison Teaching and Outreach maintains a Student Fellowship Program, which provides opportunities for students from any academic discipline to gain in-depth experience in program management and capacity building while supporting the Institute itself.

Tutoring and Academic Enrichment

The Institute works to provide academic tutoring to inmate populations, as well as the opportunity for inmates to take credit and non-credit courses taught by professors and students from The College of New Jersey. Learn how you can become a tutor!

The College in Prison Program

The College of New Jersey students and Department of Correction students have the opportunity to take credit-bearing courses together behind bars.

Community Service Initiatives

The Bonner Center for Civic Engagement at TCNJ works with inmates at state correctional institutions on a variety of projects, including an innovative course that results in the production of a magazine, consisting of the inmates’ literary works.
